Roxanne enjoys backpacking and sketches in the West Virginia wilderness.

Roxanne’s paintings are recognized for her depiction of decorative American country genre, highlighting harvests of wildflowers, leafs, barns, ponies, fields and trees. Her paintings illustrate cups and buckets full of freshly picked bouquets and terra cotta pots occupied with greenery. “Lavendar,” a popular seller, depicts violet flowers and green stems tied together with blue ribbon. Many of her paintings display sunny fields of wildflowers such as daisies, goldenrod and poppies or other sunny blossoms and country items with contrasting splashes of color. She composes nature’s beauty on watercolor paper and canvas; She believes composition is king in creating successful artwork. Her view is that “you don’t have to look any farther than your own back yard” for subject matter and so her favorite picture to paint is the wildflower. Her paintings decorate the “country” home.

Roxanne considers herself an all-American artist. She was born in Monterrey, California. Her father, a Marine, raised her on military bases in the US and around the world and she has grown-up in Georgia, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, Germany, Spain and Greece. Although she appreciated the opportunity to travel, she prefers to be considered as a southerner.

Roxanne graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from St. Mary’s College of Maryland; a small state college in coastal, southern Maryland, near Point Lookout at the convergence of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Roxanne was a two-time winner of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Alumni Association Governor’s Cup Yacht Racing poster contest. She also displayed work in juried shows at Montpelier Mansion in Laurel, MD.

Once graduating, she interned as a graphic artist for a company in Baltimore and continued working as a designer for businesses and organizations in the Baltimore/ Washington metro area. After her daughter was born, she freelanced as a graphic designer. When her daughter became of school age, they went together to school and work; Roxanne taught art to grades 1 - 12 for five years, while her daughter attended classes. Soon, Roxanne found a major graphics design position in downtown Washington D.C., and found herself riding the railroad to work, from Laurel to Washington.  Once she realized that she could do this from West Virginia, she moved to Shenandoah Junction, WV preferring the country to the city. She rode the train from Duffields, WV to DC daily until 2004.

Roxanne retired from her work as a graphic designer and is currently painting whenever she can. She has made wild, wonderful West Virginia her adopted home, a good middle ground for this all-American artist. Whenever she travels, she takes her sketchbook with her. Roxanne enjoys showing and selling her artwork and is active in the community for the arts.  She also works part-time as a framer for one of the longest running businesses in historic Shepherdstown, WV---Shepherdstown Paint & Art; You can find her artwork there, too. Roxanne was a Board Member for the Arts and Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County, WV, 2003-2007.
